AI, Bible Apps and Hermeneutics
Organisers: Dr. Jonas Kurlberg, Dr. Zoltan Schwab, Dr. Simeon Xu
The workshop will be held jointly by the CCCT and the British & Foreign Bible Society on 19-20 January 2026 in the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge.
With millions of users turning to chatbots to deepen their understanding of the Bible, generative AI is increasingly being used to interpret, interact with and explore the Bible. A recent study on ‘AI, Apps and Theological Bias’ set out to understand some of the implications of such use of AI. It homed in on how AI models within dedicated Bible apps respond to questions where Christians may disagree and sought to understand which theological traditions and perspectives are privileged. It raises some important hermeneutical questions.
The purpose of the workshop is:
- To discuss the findings of the ‘AI, Bible Apps and Theological Bias’ study.
- To attain feedback on the study in order to get ideas for future research directions. To generate interest in further research on the Bible and AI
- To build a network of academics and non-profit organisations interested in the intersection of the Bible and AI.
